The traditional role of nearly every female reporter in a Hollywood film is not to investigate a story, but to sleep with the male protagonist, and that is exactly what takes place here. The opening of Iron Man shows a young female reporter approach the billionaire industrialist Tony Stark to question him on his weapons contracts. If a future film student sat down to do a Marvel marathon from Iron Man in 2008 to Eternals in 2021, they’d get a very effective timeline of progressive social change in our era. It operates as a marker for our cultural development. And now, finally, we are seeing mixed-race same-sex relationships placed firmly on the same footing as more traditional romances. There is arguably no more wide-reaching cultural phenomenon on the planet than a Marvel film. It is a tentpole release from a studio which dominates the box office. Eternals had the second-largest worldwide opening weekend since the start of the pandemic, totalling $162 million. We’ve seen same-sex kisses in films before of course, but not at this level. It breaks new ground, for Marvel and Hollywood generally. Phastos’ kiss was out and proud – emotional, loving, passionate, and the centrepiece of many of the film’s themes. A flashback scene in Thor Ragnarok showed the character Valkyrie being saved by her female lover, but it was all unspoken. Marvel has dabbled with same-sex relationships before, but always in a coy and demure way. Suddenly everything goes quiet and you can feel the cultural landscape change under your feet. But the most earth-shattering moment comes when the black superhero Phastos kisses his husband, played by an Arab Muslim.
